by Blaine Newnham
I’m very interested to see how this plays out.
At the golf club where I have been a member for nearly 25 years – Wing Point G&CC on Bainbridge Island, Wash. – we recently spent the money to put in a new irrigation system.

Amateur Golfers May Receive Help With Expenses Associated With Competitions

Highly-skilled amateur golfers who have chosen to retain their amateur status have historically had the opportunity to participate in many prestigious championships. During the last few years, several local and national tours limited to amateur golfers have developed, giving amateur golfers of all skill levels the opportunity to have a “tour” experience. One thing that all of these golfers soon realize is that it can be very expensive to participate in these competitions. Fortunately, the USGA Rules of Amateur Status allow amateur golfers to receive help with these costs as described below.

Some thoughts on Tiger Woods

by Blaine Newnham
I hope that if he plays in the Masters, it is next year’s Masters. We’ve all invested time and emotion in this guy.
I first saw him as a 16-year-old at Seattle’s Jefferson Park GC, giving a clinic to city kids.
A role model. Then, especially then. He had already won two U.S. Junior Amateur Championships, and yet was as much about discipline and dedication as he was about hitting golf balls.
I saw him win his third of three U..S. Amateurs, at Pumpkin Ridge in Portland. And then four straight major championships at Pebble Beach, St. Andrews, Valhalla and, yes, Augusta National.
No athlete I had been around in 40 years in the business had accomplished as much. Or been so insulated.
People ask me all the time if I had some idea what was going on outside the ropes. Absolutely not.

Bright Times Ahead for Golf Industry? Well, brighter perhaps

by Tony Dear
Manufacturers, retailers, golf course owners, and club professionals will tell you 2009 was a pretty miserable year for the golf industry. The Pacific Northwest didn’t fare nearly as badly as other parts of the country in terms of rounds played (barely one percent down compared with over three percent down in Florida), but reports from pro shops and off-course stores in our area show retail sales here were hit every bit as hard as they were elsewhere.

Helping Junior Golfers With Expenses

by Bernie Loehr Director, Amateur Status and Rules of Golf at the USGA
The good news for junior golfers today is that there are many opportunities for them to hone their games by competing against other junior golfers on tours devoted to junior golfers or in local, state and national competitions limited to junior golfers. The bad news is that it can be very expensive to travel around the country to participate in several competitions. Fortunately, the USGA Rules of Amateur Status allow junior golfers to receive help with these costs.

SIX DAYS, THREE U.S. OPEN COURSES, 2,487 MILES – ONE MEMORABLE WEEK

One of the architects of Chambers Bay gives his thoughts on what it takes to prepare for a U.S. Open.
We asked Jay Blasi of Robert Trent Jones II, Golf Course Architects, to review three different U.S. Open venues he was lucky enough to visit in the span of one week this summer. On June 11th, he was at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash., working on the new practice facility which will be ready for the 2010 U.S. Amateur. On June 14th he attended the 2009 U.S. Open at Bethpage Black in New York and walked all 18 holes in order. And on June 16th he headed to the eastern tip of Long Island to play Shinnecock Hills, site of the 1896, 1986, 1995 and 2004 U.S. Opens.
