Each year more than 800 deserving caddies attend college
on tuition and housing grants from the Evans Scholars Foundation.
To qualify, caddies must be nominated by their club and meet four
requirements:
1. Must rank among the top 25 percent of their
high school class
2. Have a superior caddie record for two or more
years
3. Show financial need and have outstanding personal
character
4. Outstanding personal character, integrity, and
leadership abilities.
More than 200 new Scholars are chosen annually. The culmination
of the selection process is the applicant’s interview with
the Scholarship Committee, consisting of WGA officials and other
friends of the program. The decision follows, and the new Evans
Scholar is notified within a few days.

The Trust Agreement under which Evans Scholars Foundation operates
specifies that the candidate must be a qualified caddie. This requires
that he/she has been a full-time caddie on a regular basis for a
minimum of two summers. The student must be:
1. Be trained and certified as a caddie
2. Caddies a minimum of 25 loops per year
In clubs which do not have a caddie program, the candidate must
get caddie training from the Golf Professional who will arrange
for him or her to caddie a minimum of 25 loops per year. Students
are encouraged to volunteer to caddie for members if it will help
get the required rounds needed for a scholarship; it will pay off
in the future with a scholarship!

The Trust Agreement under which Evans Scholars Foundation operates
specifies that the candidate must be a qualified caddie. This generally
requires that he/she has been a full-time caddie on a regular basis
for a minimum of two summers. In the Pacific Northwest there also
is an alternative combination-option with the following three requirements:
1. Be trained and certified as a caddie
2. Caddies a minimum of 15 loops per year
3. Be employed for a minimum of two years at a
club in golf-related duties
In clubs which do not have a caddie program, the candidate must
get caddie training from the Golf Professional who will arrange
for him or her to caddie a minimum of 15 loops per year concurrent
with the candidate’s other golf-related duties.

Evans Scholarships are awarded each year to those candidates who
have the greatest financial need among those candidates who have
satisfied the minimum academic and caddie requirements for nomination.
Every year many candidates are eliminated in the Semifinals for
one or more reasons: (1) the family’s income and/or assets
are above our cutoff point in reference to the number of dependent
children in the family; (2) the candidate’s caddie and employment
record at the Club does not satisfy our minimum requirement: (3)
the candidate’s rank in class and/or test scores are not high
enough; and (4) failure of the candidate or the candidate’s
parents to submit all of the materials required to evaluate (1)
(2) and (3) above.
We advise every candidate, therefore, to apply for other scholarships
in the event that there is a negative decision on his or her application
for an Evans Scholarship.

The cutoff point on financial need is not made until we have received
the required Parents’ Financial Aid Form from the College
Scholarship Service and a photocopy of the required previous year’s
IRS 1040 and W-2 forms from the parents. The cutoff point then insures
that those candidates who have the greatest need and who also satisfy
the minimum academic and caddie requirements will reach the Finals.
(When a candidate is eliminated on the Financial Need factor, it
does not imply that there is no financial need; rather, it means
that other candidates have a greater degree of financial need.)
It must be remembered that the primary purpose of the Evans Scholarship
Program is to assist those caddies who have the greatest need for
financial assistance to attend college. The golfers who contribute
to Evans Scholars Foundation do so with this understanding.

The Trust Agreement under which Evans Scholars Foundation operates
specifies that the candidate must be a qualified caddie. This generally
requires that he has been a full-time caddie on a regular basis
for a minimum of two summers. In the Pacific Northwest the following
two requirements exist: be trained and certified as a caddie; caddies
a minimum of 25 loops per year In Clubs which do not have a caddie
program, the candidate’s only hope is that the Golf Professional
will train him as a caddie and will arrange for him or her to caddie
a minimum of 25 loops per year.

“When will I know the Committee’s decision?”
No decision will be made on a candidate’s application until
the Semifinals when all candidates from his section will be compared
on all required materials. No personal interview is involved in
the Semifinals. In the Pacific Northwest the Semifinals are scheduled
for early February, and candidates will be notified promptly of
the decision.
Only those candidates who survive the Semifinals are invited to
the Finals: A personal interview is scheduled with the Scholarship
Committee in either Portland or Seattle in late February.
In the Finals, Evans Scholarships will be awarded to those candidates
who (1) satisfy the Committee’s evaluation of their financial
need and their caddie & employment record, (2) have the best
combined high school record and test scores, and (3) have actively
participated in extracurricular, civic or community activities.
Finalists will be informed of the Committee’s decision within
a few days after the interview.

All scholarships to Washington residents will be awarded to the
University of Washington in Seattle, and all scholarships to Oregon
residents will be to the University of Oregon in Eugene. Each award
is contingent upon the candidate’s admission to the University.
